What the ads on your computer do
This week I watched “We’re Building a Dystopia Just to Make People Click on Ads” which is an article that focuses on technology and how whatever you look up on the internet whether its youtube, facebook, amazon, Walmart or anything it eventually follows you around. That's the one idea that I found interesting when I was doing this blog was that everything that you look up will track you down to every site you go to and will want to suggest things similar to it. Even on youtube, it will want to bring you to different youtube videos and such in the play next column. I thought this was interesting because now that I read it I can relate to it because I've noticed it when I look up things I need or am just looking at. For example, sometimes when I go out on eBay amazon or do a google search and try and find truck parts for my trucks I'll be seeing that part on almost all the ads on every website for the rest of the week, So that's how I know it can follow you around
Another thing that came up in the video was that they would use facebook amazon and all these other websites to target certain kinds of people encouraging them whether they shouldn't vote for a certain person or not.on the website vice.com I found more information about how this girl had depression and a year later after she had taken all these meds she had still been getting ads on Facebook and Instagram for depression and all the current things she would be looking at. “Facebook draws on information—including places you check into on Facebook, pages you and your friends like, browsing the history, and information compiled by data companies like purchases at retail stores—to make ads "useful and relevant to you." This week, after the Australian reported the company was targeting depressed teens” (Paul) no matter what you do on the internet or what you look up they'll see it and try and keep you hooked and try to keep you watching. For example, if you look up a youtube video on the right it says “up next” and they use it to keep you hooked and to keep you watching more and more of their videos while they make money off the ads.

You comment that you've noticed this kind of tracking in your life. Does it bother you? Do you see anything wrong with the kind of targeted advertising, such as for depression, that you discuss?
ReplyDeleteThis is an interesting post because I have had experience with ads being based off of my search history. You used a lot of good points to back up your idea and you used evidence from other sources.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't bother me all that much it just gets old and annoying seeing it over and over again even after you buy it.
